Outdoor Activities - Winter Camping

Winter camping at freezing temperatures can be as exhilarating as it is a challenging experience. You need endurance and the will to face the elements. But how you prepare yourself for the winter will make the difference between a fabulous experience and a painful frostbite, confined to bed. Selecting the right clothing and appropriate shelter can go a long way to a great weekend of winter camping.

The proper way to dress for winter camping

To start with, use woolen or synthetic garments for the winter camping. Avoid cotton as cotton loses its insulating properties very easily. You should dress in layers when embarking on such an expedition. Doing this will ensure that you regulate your body temperature. Begin with a bottom layer that will be hugging your body. This is usually long johns or something similar. The next layer will be for insulation and may consist of fleece. Then comes the outer layer, which must be waterproof, and windproof to ward off the elements. The trick of the trade is that you can remove layers when feeling warm and put on layers when feeling chilly. Remember that you must stick to fleece or wool whenever you are on your winter camping trip for lasting warmth and comfort.

The right footwear for winter camping

Apart from the right kind of winter garments and windcheaters, your shoes play a great role too in the winter campsite. There is the fear of frostbite that can have a serious consequence. Make sure that the shoes you are wearing are waterproof. Otherwise, they can absorb water, which in turn will freeze, giving you excruciating pain and discomfort. Some prefer plastic or leather treated with oil instead of regular leather, which perhaps serves the purpose best.

Winter camping – the role of shelter

Never minimize the role of shelter played during the winter camping. Some prefer Three Season Tents that have ventilation holes in them, allowing chill wind to flow freely within the tent, turning the interior ice-cold. Thick blizzard-proof tents are more likely places of shelter for your winter camping since they are fully insulated against the frosty winds and the ravages of nature. Three Season tents are OK for mild winters only.
